Prithvi
Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Mumbai, is situated in the posh
Juhu locality. It is basically a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj
Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation. Prithviraj Kapoor began
Prithvi Theatres in 1944, when he was touching the heights in his
career. Later, his son Shashi Kapoor and daughter-in-law Jennifer set up
the Memorial Trust in the 1975, as a tribute to the memory of Prithviraj
Kapoor. The main aims of setting up the trust were:
Promoting professional Hindi theatre.
Helping and promoting talented people in the Film Industry.
Setting up a theatre of international standards.
Providing medical and educational assistance to theatre workers
and their children
Setting up a place for rehearsals and workshops, etc.
Prithvi Theater was inaugurated in November 1978 and
since then; it has constantly striving to bright the talented
individuals into limelight. A completely non-profit organization, the
theatre depends on donations from individuals and companies who want to
promote the performing and fine arts in India. Apart from conducting
plays, Prithvi Theatre also organizes workshops, exhibitions, poetry
sessions, film screenings, musical concerts, etc. There is also a book
shop inside its premises.
Plays
The main aim behind the establishment of Prithvi Trust was to promote
theatre. Towards this end, it conducts plays on a daily basis, except
for Mondays of the week. The theatre also conducts plays at the Horniman
Circle Garden, on the first weekend of every non-rainy month. During
summers, children's plays are organized at Prithvi.
Prithvi Theatre Festival
Prithvi Theater Festival is an event that celebrates all the forms of
theatre in the current, including local, national, international; old
traditions, new forms, cross-currents, etc. It was started in the year
1983 and has become an annual event since then.
Summertime Workshops
Every year, during summer vacations, Prithvi Theatre organizes
workshops for children aged 6-16 years. The activities taught at the
workshops include anything creative, from poetry to acting to pottery to
mask-making. The main aim behind the workshops is to encourage the
children to unleash their creative talent.
PEN
PEN is the literary organization of Prithvi Theatre, set up with the
aim of promoting poetry. Sessions are conducted by the organization on
the second Saturday of every month, where people read/share/discuss
texts from all genres
Vikalp
Vikalp is the name given to the monthly documentary screenings
conducted at the theatre. It is conducted on the last Sunday of every
month and is open to everyone.
Memorial Concert
Prithvi Theatre plays host to a Memorial Concert, held every February
to commemorate the memory of Jennifer Kapoor. Here, one can see Zakir
Hussain performing at his very best.
Reader's Shop
For the book lovers, there is a Reader's Shop inside the premises of
Prithvi Theatre. Here, one can get a wide variety of books.
